About

Lane Nakano was a Nisei soldier who became an actor and later a businessman. Raised in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, he experienced forced removal: during World War II his family was confined at the Heart Mountain camp in Wyoming. While still at the camp, Nakano enlisted in the Army and served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit composed mostly of Japanese‑American soldiers and noted for its high number of decorations.

After the war he was discovered by screenwriter‑director Robert Pirosh and rose to prominence as the second billing in the film Go for Broke (1951), which depicts the history of the 442nd. He appeared in several feature films and television series in the 1950s and 1960s, often in roles connected to Japanese representation.

Beyond his performing career, Nakano was known as a singer within the Japanese‑American community in Los Angeles. He later held executive positions at Magna Industries, Inc., an import‑export firm, and was involved in businesses related to greenhouse operations and aluminum cladding.

His family story inspired later works: his son Desmond Nakano drew on the family’s experiences to develop the feature film American Pastime (2007), which deals with Japanese‑American life during the war.
