About

Laurie Anderson is an American experimental artist whose work spans performance, music, composition, and multimedia projects. Trained in art history and sculpture, she rose to prominence in New York in the 1970s with intermedia performances that explored language, technology, and image. She became known to a wider public in 1981 when the single "O Superman" reached number two on the U.K. charts, propelling her beyond the avant-garde circuit.

A pioneer in electronic music, Anderson invented and used custom instruments — from a violin fitted with a magnetic tape bow to the “talking stick,” a MIDI controller developed with Interval Research — as extensions of her investigation into sound and technology. Her work includes the monumental continuous performance United States and the album Big Science, as well as the concert film Home of the Brave.

Over her career she collaborated with figures such as Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Lou Reed, to whom she was married. Recurring themes in her work examine the effects of technology on human relationships; in 2003 she was the first artist-in-residence at NASA, which led to the performance The End of the Moon. Anderson’s career marks the intersection of experimental art and popular culture, leaving a legacy as a sonic and performative innovator.
