Lenore Romney

About

Lenore LaFount Romney was an occasional actress and American public figure, best known as the wife of businessman and governor George W. Romney and as First Lady of Michigan from 1963 to 1969. A literature graduate with training in theater, she appeared in small film roles before leaving the performing arts after marrying in 1931. As first lady she was active in cultural, charitable, and civic organizations, holding leadership positions in groups such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the YWCA, and American Field Services.

Throughout the 1960s she was a regular presence at public events and speeches, supporting her husband's 1968 presidential campaign and advocating greater female participation in business and politics while holding traditional views. In 1970 she became the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate from Michigan; she struggled to establish a distinct political profile and was defeated by a wide margin in the general election.

After the campaign she returned to volunteer work and served on national boards focused on volunteering and interfaith dialogue, maintaining a moderate public role and a legacy tied to civic activism and support for social causes.
