About
Léon Marcel Jules Smet was a Belgian performer whose career spanned revue theatre, cabaret and television. Trained at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels under the influence of his sister, he became known as a comic actor, dancer, singer and acrobat, performing with the Monnaie ballet company and in a thriving cabaret scene in Belgium and France under the stage name Jean-Michel.
In the 1930s he founded the Brussels cabaret Le Trou vert and maintained ties with the Belgian surrealist movement, appearing in the 1937 surrealist short film Monsieur Fantômas. During the occupation he faced hardship after performance venues were closed; afterwards he worked on programming for a station intended for the troops, an activity that generated controversy after the war, although he was not prosecuted for collaboration.
Back in Brussels he also worked as a teacher and trainer: he opened a drama school with a regional reputation, attracting students who came as far as Paris. Later he moved into television directing for Belgian TV, but encountered personal problems and alcohol dependency that led to a decline in his social standing. His legacy combines contributions to Belgian theatre and cabaret, a role as an educator and a notable presence in the cultural ferment between the wars.
