About

Leonard Bertram Schapiro was a British jurist and scholar who specialized in the history and politics of Soviet Russia. Born in Scotland and educated in Riga and Saint Petersburg, he returned to the United Kingdom after the Russian Civil War and read law, practicing as a solicitor from 1932; during the Second World War he worked in military intelligence services.

From the mid-20th century he devoted himself to the study of communism and totalitarianism, teaching political science at the London School of Economics until 1975. His major early work, The Origins of the Communist Autocracy (1955), and especially From Lenin to Stalin (1960) established his reputation as a critic of the Soviet regime.

Working within the liberal school of Soviet historiography, Schapiro was known for defending the relevance of the concept of totalitarianism and for privileging a legal and institutional analysis of the Communist Party. He published studies on Bolshevik opposition and the evolution of Soviet power, leaving an influential legacy for postwar Russian studies.
