Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian polymath and one of the leading figures of the High Renaissance. He worked as a scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, poet, and musician.
He is also regarded as a precursor of aviation and ballistics. Often described as the archetypal Renaissance man, he combined insatiable curiosity with remarkable inventive ability and is considered one of the greatest painters of all time.
The illegitimate son of the notary Piero da Vinci and a peasant woman named Caterina, he trained in the workshop of the Florentine painter Verrocchio. Much of his early professional life was spent in the service of Ludovico Sforza.
Da Vinci devised ideas far ahead of his time, including a helicopter prototype, a tank, the use of solar energy, a calculator, double-hulled vessels, and a rudimentary theory of tectonic plates.
