About

Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch was a nobleman, writer and journalist born in Lemberg (now Lviv) who became known for stories set in 19th-century Galicia. Trained in law, history and mathematics, he began his career as a teacher and author of historical texts, but achieved greater notoriety with novellas and short stories that explored local folklore, ethnic types and social themes of the region. His best-known work, Venus in Furs (1869), presents personal fantasies and fetishes that informed both his life and his fiction.

An engaged intellectual, Sacher-Masoch held pan-Slavist sympathies and published cycles of tales devoted to Galicia’s various communities; he also edited the progressive magazine Auf der Höhe, which advocated Jewish integration and women’s emancipation. In his writings and public activity he combined humanist and socialist interests, expressed in both fiction and initiatives such as adult education associations.

The term "masochism" was coined by Richard von Krafft-Ebing from the author’s surname, a usage Sacher-Masoch rejected in his lifetime. In his later years his mental health declined, and more intimate details of his biography emerged only after posthumous publications. He remains an influential and controversial literary figure whose legacy intersects literature, psychology and the social debates of his era.
