About

An actress and writer of German origin, Lilli Palmer built an international career in film, theatre and television over five decades. She began in British productions in the 1930s, later moving to Hollywood, where she appeared in films such as Cloak and Dagger (1946) and Body and Soul (1947). She received Golden Globe nominations for But Not for Me (1959) and for the miniseries Peter the Great (1986).

In the postwar years she returned frequently to Europe, earning prestigious awards: the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for The Four Poster (1953) and multiple Deutscher Filmpreis, including an honorary career prize in 1978. Her repertoire included comedies, historical dramas and period films, with notable roles in The Pleasure of His Company (1961) and The House That Screamed (1969).

Besides acting, Palmer published memoirs and fiction, notably Change Lobsters and Dance (1975) and the novel The Red Raven (1978). Her career reflects the experience of European artists who worked across continents, a legacy also recognized with honors such as the Great Cross of Merit of Germany and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
