About

Louis Charles Breguet was a French engineer and entrepreneur, regarded as a leading pioneer of aviation. A distinguished graduate of the École Supérieure d’Électricité, he turned early to aerodynamics, developing experimental methods such as wind tunnels and introducing preflight testing for critical components—an innovative practice for his time.

He built aircraft and founded the Société Anonyme des Ateliers d'Aviation Louis Breguet; his first biplane, of 1909, and subsequent designs established his technical reputation. During the First World War he became prominent for the Breguet 14, a reconnaissance aircraft produced on a large scale for the Allied forces.

After the war he helped develop civil aviation, taking part in the founding of the Compagnie des Messageries Aériennes, a precursor to Air France, and he worked on seaplanes and other aircraft widely used for commercial and military purposes. In the 1930s, with René Dorand, he created the Gyroplane Laboratoire, a coaxial helicopter that set records in 1936.

In the post‑Second World War period he played a decisive role in rebuilding the French aeronautical industry and advancing helicopter design. He received numerous national honors and left a lasting technical and industrial legacy in French aviation.
