About

Jean Louis Barthou was a prominent French politician and jurist active during the Third Republic. Over a long ministerial career from 1894 to 1934, he held offices including Prime Minister (22 March–9 December 1913) and several key ministries — Public Instruction, Justice, the Interior, War, Public Works and Foreign Affairs — the latter post he occupied when he was assassinated in 1934. He was also a member of the Académie Française, occupying seat 28 from 1918.

As Foreign Minister, Barthou worked to build alliances intended to contain Germany, promoting agreements with Poland and the Little Entente and attempting to forge a front involving Britain, Italy and the Soviet Union. He negotiated the initial framework of a Franco‑Soviet pact that was only signed by his successor. His diplomatic activity reflected French concern about rearmament and European instability in the 1930s.

Beyond his political career, Barthou wrote on literature and history, founded the review Byblis and published studies and biographies, including works on Victor Hugo and Wagner. His assassination in Marseille, in the attack that killed King Alexander I of Yugoslavia, cut short a career of considerable influence on French foreign policy and left a record of diplomatic efforts against German revanchism.
