About

Louis Feuillade was a French screenwriter and director who played a central role in shaping silent cinema, renowned for his narrative inventiveness and for pioneering film serials. As Gaumont’s general director from 1907, he helped professionalize the industry and expand cinema for mass audiences, influencing practices that would later appear in popular film and in what came to be called the B-movie.

As a writer and filmmaker, he made hundreds of films and penned roughly a thousand scenarios, forging a style that blended quotidian realism with dreamlike fantasy. He originated the “cine-roman” and devised hugely popular serials — among the best known are Fantômas (1913), Les Vampires (1915) and Judex (1917–18) — whose rocambolesque plots and memorable characters (Irma Vep, Fantômas) etched themselves into the public imagination.

Feuillade also championed a cinematic aesthetic less theatrical and more pictorial, countering the static literary adaptations common at the time, and his suspense techniques influenced later directors. After being underrated in the 1920s, he was reassessed by movements such as Surrealism and remains a touchstone for studies of seriality, realism and fantasy in early cinema.
