About

Louis Jouvet was one of the central figures of 20th-century French theatre, recognized as an actor, director, stage designer and teacher. Trained as a pharmacist, he left that profession to devote himself to the stage, joining Jacques Copeau’s company in 1913, where he refined lighting and makeup techniques — even developing a type of light that came to be associated with his name.

As artistic director he led the Comédie des Champs-Élysées and, from 1934, the Théâtre de l’Athénée, a post he held until his death. He was also one of the founders of the Cartel des Quatre, an initiative that sought an alternative to the commercial and academic theatre of the time.

He was notable for his long collaboration with the playwright Jean Giraudoux, staging important plays such as The Madwoman of Chaillot, and achieved great success with the comedy Doctor Knock, which became his signature play. He appeared in around 34 films and taught at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts of France.

His legacy includes influence on generations of actors and directors, the modernization of theatrical practice in Paris, and institutional memory embodied in the Théâtre de l’Athénée itself, which now bears his name.
