About

Lúcio José Maia Oliveira, known professionally as Lúcio Maia or Jackson Bandeira, is a guitarist from Pernambuco recognized for his central role in Recife’s music scene. He was a founding member of Nação Zumbi, the band that, alongside Mundo Livre S/A, helped establish the Manguebeat movement — a cultural milestone that fused northeastern Brazilian rhythms with rock and electronic music and had a major impact on Brazil’s 1990s musical landscape.

Known for his technique and inventiveness, he was named Brazil’s best guitarist for seven consecutive years by the magazine O Dilúvio. His discography includes key recordings with Nação Zumbi, such as Da Lama ao Caos (1994) and Afrociberdelia (1996), as well as contributions to projects by other bands and artists, including Soulfly and Seu Jorge.

From 2007 he pursued solo work under the Maquinado project, releasing albums that explore experimental and electronic sounds. He has also contributed soundtracks and collaborated on recordings and tours, joining Marisa Monte’s musical team in 2012–2013. He left Nação Zumbi in 2020 and continues to work on solo projects, theater and film, maintaining a presence in contemporary Brazilian music.
