Ludwig Renn, the pen name of Arnold Friedrich Vieth von Golßenau (1889–1979), was a German writer whose work and life reflect the upheavals of the twentieth century. Born into a Saxon noble family, he survived World War I as a front-line officer; that military experience produced his most impactful novel, Krieg (1928), which depicts with brutal realism the life of the ordinary soldier on the Western Front and brought him international recognition.

After the war, Renn moved toward the communist cause: he joined the Communist Party, took part in proletarian writers’ organizations, and played an active role in publications and in the political education of workers. His activism led him to renounce his noble title and adopt the literary name Ludwig Renn. Nazi repression resulted in his imprisonment in the 1930s and, after his release, in his service with the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War, where he held command positions and wrote about the experience.

Exiled in Mexico until 1947, he returned to the Soviet zone of Germany and joined the cultural institutions of the GDR, working as a translator, lecturer, and member of the Academy of Arts. Author of autobiographical novels, travel essays, and memoirs, Renn is remembered as one of the founders of German proletarian-revolutionary literature and for documenting, from personal experience, the turbulent transition from war to political activism and exile.
