About

Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein was an Austrian-born philosopher who became a British citizen and is a central figure in twentieth-century philosophy. He became known for his linguistic turn and for fundamental contributions to logic and to the philosophy of language, mathematics, and mind. Many scholars regard him as the most influential philosopher of the past century.

His work is usually divided into two distinct phases. From the first phase, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921) stands out; that work influenced logical positivism by examining the conditions under which language and thought can represent the world. In the later phase, beginning in the 1930s, his reflections moved toward what came to be called ordinary language philosophy, consolidated in the Philosophical Investigations, published posthumously in 1953.

Born into a wealthy Viennese family, Wittgenstein initially trained as an engineer and early encountered figures such as Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell, who directed him toward philosophy. His intellectual and personal life—marked by high ethical and aesthetic demands—left a deep legacy in the theory of language, analytic philosophy, and debates about mind, meaning, and understanding.
