About

Aurélien‑Marie Lugné, known as Lugné‑Poe, was a central figure in fin‑de‑siècle French theatre, working as an actor, director and stage designer. In Paris he founded the Théâtre de l’Œuvre, a decisive venue for the symbolist and experimental scene that brought literature and the visual arts closer together at the end of the 19th century.

Under his direction, the company premiered and established innovative European repertoire in France, including works by Maurice Maeterlinck, Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. His theatre laboratory emphasized translations and Scandinavian authors, helping to introduce new dramatic languages to Parisian audiences.

Beyond his role as director, Lugné‑Poe was actively involved as a stage director and designer, imparting distinct aesthetic visions to productions and collaborating with actors and visual artists of the period. His career includes emblematic stagings such as Pelléas et Mélisande and several plays by Ibsen.

Lugné‑Poe’s legacy lies in spreading modern repertoire and in stage experimentation that influenced the renewal of French theatre, paving the way for more symbolic and psychological staging practices in the 20th century.
