About

Luis Bedoya Reyes was a prominent Peruvian lawyer and political leader, founder of the Christian People’s Party (PPC) and a central figure in Christian democracy in Peru. He held significant public offices, including Minister of Justice and Worship (1963) and mayor of Lima (1964–1969), where he promoted the modernization of municipal administration; his most visible project was the construction of the Vía Expresa along the Paseo de la República, popularly known as the “Zanjón de Bedoya.”

As a party leader, he helped found the PPC in 1966 after leaving the Christian Democrat Party, maintained lasting organizational influence, and was regarded as a political mentor to later figures such as Lourdes Flores Nano. He served in the Constituent Assembly of 1978, winning a large vote and making notable democratic gestures, including declining the Chamber presidency in favor of Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre.

He ran for the presidency of the Republic in 1980 and 1985 without winning, and he opposed measures such as the attempted nationalization of the banking system in the 1980s. Over his life he received decorations and academic and public honors; he turned 100 in 2019 and died in 2021, leaving a lasting legacy in social-Christian conservatism and in Lima’s municipal politics.
