About

Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi was a Zulu prince and one of the most prominent and controversial political figures in twentieth‑century South Africa. He led the KwaZulu government under apartheid, holding that position until the territory’s incorporation into the new democratic order in 1994, and founded the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in 1975, which he led for decades. At the same time, he served in a traditional role as prime minister of the Zulu royal household from 1954, positioning the monarchy as a symbol of identity and political mobilization.

His career combined public opposition to key aspects of the apartheid regime — for example his refusal to accept the nominal “independence” of KwaZulu and his support for Nelson Mandela’s release — with an ambiguous cooperation with state structures, a stance that drew criticism and led sections of the anti‑apartheid movement to isolate him. During the transition to democracy he took part in the negotiations and joined the national unity government as Minister of Home Affairs (1994–2004).

Buthelezi’s record leaves a complex legacy: on one hand he built a large political organization and maintained the visibility of Zulu traditional leadership; on the other, official commissions have held him responsible for acts of political violence during the 1980s and 1990s, a factor that shapes his public memory and debates over reconciliation and justice in contemporary South Africa.
