About

Marcel Dupré was a French organist, pianist, composer and music educator, known for his virtuosity as an improviser and for his extensive teaching activity. His career included concerts, organ compositions and orchestral works featuring organ, as well as arrangements and chamber pieces that expanded the twentieth-century liturgical and concert repertory.

Author of fundamental treatises, Dupré systematized the technique of organ improvisation and wrote studies on harmony, counterpoint, fugue, accompaniment of Gregorian chant, as well as reflections on organ construction, acoustics and music philosophy. These publications cemented his influence as a teacher and as a trainer of generations of organists.

Among his compositions are notable works for solo organ and for organ with orchestra—such as symphonies and concertos—sets of chorales and motets, and pedagogical pieces like the Vingt-Quatre Inventions op. 50 and the Eight Short Preludes on Gregorian Themes op. 45. His legacy endures in the liturgical repertoire and in teaching practice for the instrument, keeping him a central figure in the French organ tradition.
