About

Marcelo Rubens Paiva is a Brazilian writer, playwright and journalist whose work occupies a prominent place in contemporary literature and theatre. He became nationally known with the memoir Feliz Ano Velho (1982), an account of the accident that left him tetraplegic and of themes such as rehabilitation, youth and overcoming; the book had significant commercial and critical impact, went through multiple editions and was adapted for stage and film.

Over his career he has published novels, short stories and dramatic texts, including Blecaute, Não És Tu, Brasil and Malu de Bicicleta, the latter also adapted for film. As a playwright he authored award-winning plays such as Da Boca pra Fora, and from 2009 he directed his own productions.

In parallel, he has worked in television as a screenwriter and on cultural programs, and is a columnist for leading newspapers where he comments on politics, society and culture. His work and personal history — marked by his father’s disappearance during the dictatorship — have contributed to his public profile and to debates on memory, politics and rights in Brazil.
