About

Louisa Anne Stuart, known as the Marchioness of Waterford, was a British aristocrat whose work combined art, religion, and philanthropy. Recognized as a talented painter, she exhibited works in galleries until about 1870 and studied with figures such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as well as attending drawing classes associated with John Ruskin. Her presence and appearance are cited as influential among the Pre-Raphaelites, and she may also have served as a model for John Everett Millais.

Married to Lord Waterford in 1842, she lived for much of her life at Curraghmore House, County Waterford. After her husband's death in 1859, she devoted herself particularly to the welfare of local communities in Northumberland, where she left a lasting mark by redesigning the village of Ford, designing and building a school, and founding a temperance society.

The school she established remained in use until the mid-20th century and is today known as Lady Waterford Hall, serving as a gallery that preserves her memory. Her public legacy lies at the intersection of artistic production and social action aimed at education and improving local conditions.
