About

Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven was the British Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, the first woman to hold the office and the longest-serving in the 20th century. Born in Grantham as Margaret Roberts, a chemistry graduate of Oxford, a lawyer, and Member of Parliament for Finchley (1959), nicknamed the "Iron Lady" (Dama de Ferro) by a Soviet journalist.

She defeated Edward Heath in the Conservative leadership contest (1975). She implemented Thatcherism: deregulation, privatizations (British Telecom, British Gas), curbs on trade unions, and tax cuts. She faced recession, miners' strikes (1984-85), and the unpopular Community Charge (poll tax).

She won the Falklands War (1982) and was re-elected in 1983 and 1987. She survived an IRA assassination attempt (1984). She had tense relations with the Queen. She resigned in 1990 after an internal challenge. She died of a stroke; her legacy is controversial over social inequalities.
