About

Mario Lanza, born Alfredo Arnold Cocozza, was an American tenor and actor of Italian descent who achieved great fame in the late 1940s and during the 1950s. Known for a powerful, warm voice, he moved from operatic training at Tanglewood and operatic performances to film contracts in Hollywood, becoming a long‑running star at Metro‑Goldwyn‑Mayer.

His film career produced popular, million‑selling hits such as "Be My Love" and "The Loveliest Night of the Year," and featured prominent roles in films like The Great Caruso, in which he portrayed his idol Enrico Caruso. These works established him publicly as one of the most famous tenors of his era and brought him widespread commercial and critical attention.

At the same time, his career included conflicts with studios and personal difficulties, including health problems related to excesses that undermined artistic collaborations and his professional continuity. Although his career was relatively short—he died at 38—Lanza left a legacy as a vocal phenomenon who bridged operatic tradition and mid‑century American popular entertainment.
