About

Mario Monicelli was one of the most influential directors and screenwriters of postwar Italian cinema, known for his skill in shaping the commedia all’italiana. Born in Tuscany, he graduated in History and Philosophy and began his film career young, directing short films and working extensively as a critic and screenwriter. His partnership with Steno produced successful films such as Guardie e ladri and Totò a colori, before he embarked on a solo career from 1953.

Monicelli developed a narrative style defined by effective simplicity and sharp humor, often grounded in a Tuscan sensibility. I soliti ignoti (1958) is regarded as a foundational work of the commedia all’italiana, while La grande guerra (1959) earned him the Golden Lion at Venice and international recognition, including an Oscar nomination.

Over several decades he worked with major figures of Italian cinema, directing actors such as Totò, Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman and Sophia Loren, and maintaining a steady output of films, anthologies and documentaries. His work left a lasting legacy in Italian filmmaking, influencing generations through a blend of humor, social critique and narrative rigor.
