About

Martin Gabel was an American actor, director and producer whose career spanned radio, theatre and film. He rose to national prominence as the narrator and host of the celebrated radio broadcast On a Note of Triumph (May 8, 1945), a tribute to the end of World War II in Europe whose impact led to rebroadcasts across multiple networks and a later album release on Columbia Masterworks.

On stage, he established himself on Broadway: he won the Tony Award for Best Dramatic Actor in 1961 for Big Fish, Little Fish and appeared in notable productions such as Baker Street (as James Moriarty) and The Rivalry (as Stephen A. Douglas). He also worked with the Mercury Theatre under the direction of Orson Welles.

In film and television he mostly played supporting roles, often portraying criminal figures or urban professionals; among his notable credits are Deadline – U.S.A. (1952), Marnie (1964), Lady in Cement (1968) and Primera plana (1974). He was also an occasional panelist on the television program What’s My Line? and maintained ongoing collaborations with figures such as Humphrey Bogart and Frank Sinatra.

His career reflects the versatility of a performer who moved successfully between media and genres, leaving a particular legacy in broadcasting and American theatre.
