Mary Beth Edelson

About

Mary Beth Edelson was an American artist and a central figure in the feminist art movement, recognized as one of the generation’s early pioneers. She worked across multiple media—printmaking, collage, painting, photography, bronze sculpture, artist’s books and performance—exploring themes of feminine representation, motherhood and symbolic power.

Around the turn of the 1970s, Edelson shifted her practice, repurposing images of goddesses and conceptual strategies to challenge patriarchal views of women; her work Some Living American Women Artists / Last Supper, which replaces the apostles’ faces with those of women artists, became an emblem of institutional critique. She also took part in collaborative and editorial projects, including the Heresies Collective and the A.I.R. gallery, both dedicated to promoting art by women.

Her work has been shown at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In addition to her artistic production, she taught at art schools and developed initiatives to increase the presence of women’s work in museum collections. Her legacy lies in the political interventions of her art and in expanding institutional space for women creators.
