About

Maurice de Saxe, born Moritz Winkel, was one of the leading captains of the 18th century, notable for his military career in service to France. The illegitimate son of the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, he entered the military young and rose through merit and connections to the highest ranks of command: he was made Marshal of France in 1746 and governed Flanders.

During the War of the Austrian Succession he established himself as a strategist and field commander, with decisive actions such as the assault on Prague in 1741 and the victory at Fontenoy, which secured significant territorial gains in the Low Countries. His skill in organizing trenches, employing artillery and regrouping troops was regarded as exemplary by his contemporaries.

Beyond his military reputation, he left theoretical work on tactics and conduct of war, Mes rêveries, and influenced subsequent generations of officers — Frederick II of Prussia even praised him as a master of the art of war. Also known for an eventful personal life, he left a lasting military legacy within the French forces.
