About

Maurice Goudeket was a French businessman, journalist and man of letters whose public life is closely linked to the writer Colette, of whom he was the third and last husband. He worked as a pearl broker and businessman, maintaining a sophisticated lifestyle that brought him into Paris’s literary and artistic circles. From his relationship with Colette in the 1920s he also became a visible figure in the publishing and cultural world of the period.

During the 1930s and 1940s he worked as a journalist for Paris-Soir and took part in Paris’s intellectual life; his position and connections were decisive in sensitive episodes during the Occupation, when he was arrested in 1941 because of his Jewish origin and released in 1942 after interventions by various personalities—circumstances that remain little clarified. In the postwar years he devoted himself to publishing: in 1948 he created éditions du Fleuron and, in 1950, he co-founded Éditions La Palme with Pierre Berès.

In addition to supporting Colette’s work and editions—compiling biographical notes for her Complete Works—Goudeket left a legacy tied to editorial management and the Parisian cultural scene of the first half of the twentieth century.
