Maurice Jarre

About

Maurice Jarre was a prominent French composer in 20th-century cinema, best known for distinctive film scores that earned him three Academy Awards, multiple Golden Globes, BAFTAs and a Grammy. His collaboration with director David Lean — including Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and A Passage to India — established his international reputation and shaped much of his renown.

Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, Jarre combined classical techniques with percussive timbres and ethnic instruments such as the sitar and fujara, creating sonic atmospheres that heightened the dramatic impact of films. In the 1980s he incorporated electronic elements and composed fully electronic scores, broadening his stylistic range.

Beyond extensive work for film and theatre, he wrote ballets, concertos, operas and cantatas. His legacy extends both through his influence on modern film scoring and his symbolic presence in Hollywood, where he received a star on the Walk of Fame.

Father of musician Jean Michel Jarre, Maurice Jarre remained a central figure in film music until his death in 2009, leaving a catalogue recognized for its versatility and its ability to evoke places and emotions through sound.
