About

Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck was one of the leading figures of symbolism in French-language literature, working as a playwright, poet and essayist. Trained in law at Ghent, he settled in Paris where he moved among central figures of symbolism and German romanticism— influences that shaped his plays and writings between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His theatrical work, characterized by introspective and mystical atmospheres, includes notable titles such as Serres chaudes, La Princesse Maleine and Les Sept princesses.

Maeterlinck also explored natural themes and entomology in books such as La Vie des Termites, La Vie des fourmis and L'Araignée de verre, expanding his range beyond fiction. He received wide public and intellectual recognition and was even celebrated by contemporaries as an innovative and generous spirit.

However, his reputation was damaged by accusations of plagiarism—particularly regarding La Vie des Termites, which was alleged to have reproduced work by Afrikaner researcher Eugène Marais—and by disputes over the originality of Monna Vanna. Despite the controversies, Maeterlinck left a lasting legacy in symbolist theatre and in literary reflection on the human condition.
