About

Maurice de Vlaminck was a French painter associated with the group of artists known as the Fauves, a movement noted for its intense use of color between 1904 and 1908. Self-taught, he began painting in late adolescence and, together with André Derain and Henri Matisse, took part in the controversial 1905 Salon d'Automne, where the critic Louis Vauxcelles labeled the group “fauves.”

Early in his career, his works—such as Sur le zinc and L'homme à la pipe (1900)—show the influence of Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh, with energetic application of paint and vivid colors that favor emotional effect over psychological description of the sitter. In his landscapes, especially those painted along the Seine and in Chatou, Vlaminck simplified forms with broad brushstrokes, turning the scene into a vehicle for mood and movement.

From 1908 his palette grew darker under the influence of Cézanne, and his work evolved toward deeper tones and vigorous impasto. Over his life he wrote autobiographies and maintained a critical stance toward later movements such as Cubism. His legacy is tied to the chromatic renewal and expressive freedom he helped bring to modern French painting.
