About

Max Stirner, the pen name of Johann Kaspar Schmidt, was a German post‑Hegelian philosopher whose work provoked sustained debates about individuality and authority. His major book, The Unique and Its Property (1844), systematically attacks ideologies—from humanism to nationalism, from liberalism to communism—arguing that they function as authorities that deny the individual. That radically ego‑centred position influenced currents as varied as nihilism, existentialism, individualist anarchism, and several strands of postmodern thought.

Active among the Young Hegelians in Berlin, Stirner belonged to circles that included Ludwig Feuerbach and, peripherally, Marx and Engels; nonetheless he kept a critical and often isolated stance toward the main political movements of his time. Besides his philosophical writings, he translated economic texts and issued critical compilations, but he failed to attain financial success.

Stirner’s reception has been diverse and controversial: his defense of the individual and his critique of social institutions drew both anarchist militants and readers with conservative leanings, while scholars note his importance for discussions of authority, work, and autonomy. Stirner’s legacy remains a touchstone for those who challenge the normative foundations of society and politics.
