About

Michel Legrand was a French composer, arranger, conductor and pianist whose career became established through film composition and its intersections with jazz. Over several decades he wrote memorable film scores, notably Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, La Piscine, Summer of '42 and adaptations of Les Misérables, works that helped build his international reputation.

Alongside his film work, Legrand played a significant role in the jazz world: from the late 1950s he led groups that included names such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans and Herbie Mann, and he composed for artists like Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan and Phil Woods. His songs — including What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life, Watch What Happens and The Summer Knows — were widely covered by jazz musicians.

Praised by critics, he received major awards, including Oscars for Best Score and for Original Song (The Windmills of Your Mind). His work crossed genres and cultures, influencing both cinema and the contemporary jazz repertoire.
