About

Micaela de Valois (Michelle of France) was Duchess consort of Burgundy by her marriage to Philip the Good. A daughter of King Charles VI and Isabeau of Bavaria, she belonged to the high French nobility of the early 15th century and her marriage reinforced ties between the French crown and the powerful Burgundian house.

Raised in the care of the queen, her childhood did not match rumors of neglect: she received gifts and attention from her mother and was sheltered during plague outbreaks. The name Micaela refers to Saint Michael the Archangel, chosen by her father after an improvement in his health during a pilgrimage.

In her married life she faced the political upheavals of the time: the assassination of John the Fearless and the involvement of her brother, the future Charles VII, affected her emotional state. She had a daughter, Agnes, who died in childhood.

Admired by the people of Ghent, where she died in 1422, Micaela was buried at the Abbey of Saint Bavo. After her death rumors of poisoning involving a former attendant arose, but that suspicion never led to a formal charge.
