About
Mike Oldfield is an English musician, composer and producer whose career became known for blending progressive rock with elements of classical music, folk, electronic music and world sounds. He rose to worldwide fame with his debut album Tubular Bells (1973), the inaugural release of Virgin Records; its opening theme gained prominence after being used in the film The Exorcist and drove massive sales in the United Kingdom.
A versatile instrumentalist, Oldfield performed multiple instruments on his recordings — guitar, keyboards, percussion and vocals — and built a body of work notable for long instrumental compositions such as Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations. Over the decades he alternated ambitious avant‑garde projects with more accessible works and commercially successful songs, most notably the international single “Moonlight Shadow.”
With an extensive discography (25 studio albums, several UK top 10s), Oldfield also explored new media, including initiatives in virtual reality and music games. His career included high‑profile performances such as the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games, and he formally announced his retirement in 2023, leaving a lasting legacy in contemporary music.
