About

Mike Pinder (Michael Thomas Pinder) was an English musician and keyboardist who co-founded the Moody Blues, a band whose orchestral arrangements helped define symphonic rock in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a member of the classic lineup, Pinder took part in the band's landmark recordings, including the acclaimed Days of Future Passed, and contributed compositions and vocals to progressive, mystical tracks such as "The Best Way to Travel" and "Om".

Even before the band achieved wide recognition, he worked as a development engineer at the factory that produced the first Mellotrons in the United Kingdom. His technical skill and experimentation made him a reference for incorporating that technology into rock, creating fluid orchestral textures that became a Moody Blues hallmark. He also introduced the instrument to colleagues, influencing later uses by artists such as the Beatles.

Throughout his career with the Moodies (until his departure after the album Octave in 1978), Pinder served as arranger, multi-instrumentalist and both backing and lead vocalist on selected tracks. His pioneering role with the Mellotron and his contributions to the group's symphonic sound earned him lasting recognition, culminating in his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band.
