Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was a Tunisian resident in France who became known for carrying out the Nice attack on 14 July 2016, when he drove a truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais. The incident struck hundreds of people, leaving dozens dead and many injured; the perpetrator was killed by police shortly after the attack.
Before the attack, Bouhlel had lived in Nice since the mid-2000s, working as a delivery driver and with a history of personal and legal problems, including violence and substance use, as well as cases for assault. Reports indicate he faced financial difficulties, had received psychological care, and was undergoing a marital separation.
Subsequent investigations pointed to indications of consumption of extremist material and internet searches related to religious subjects and violent acts in the days preceding the attack. French authorities described signs of recent radicalization, although no formal direct link with international organizations was established before the incident.
The case sparked a broad public debate in France about security, prevention of radicalization and authorities’ responses to acts of terrorism, and left a legacy of mourning and questions about the individual and social factors that preceded the tragedy.
