About
Mohamed el-Amir Awad el-Sayed Atta was an Egyptian known for leading and carrying out one of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He graduated in architecture from Cairo University and expanded his studies in urban planning at the Technical University of Hamburg, where he joined the so-called "Hamburg Cell" alongside other young men who were later recruited by al-Qaeda.
During his time in Germany, Atta drew closer to jihadist networks and traveled to Afghanistan, where he is said to have confirmed ties with the group's leaders. From 2000 he began coordinating and training at flight schools in the United States, obtaining a pilot's license and organizing the operation's logistics.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, he acted as the hijacker-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11, which was deliberately flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, resulting in thousands of deaths and profound geopolitical impact. The episode marked Atta as a central figure in the attacks and in subsequent debates about international terrorism, aviation security, and counterterrorism policy.
