About

Naomi Mitchison was a Scottish novelist and poet, recognized as an important figure in twentieth-century British literature. The author of more than 90 works, she wrote with equal facility across a range of genres — historical novels, science fiction, fantasy, travel writing and autobiography — and maintained a steady literary output over many decades.

Her historical fiction received critical attention: works such as The Conquered (1923) and Cloud Cuckoo Land (1925) display an interest in ancient eras, while The Corn King and the Spring Queen (1931) is often cited as one of the great historical novels of the period for its treatment of different societies and sexual themes handled in ways uncommon for the time.

Mitchison also provoked controversy with writing of a social and political nature. We Have Been Warned (1935), the result of a trip to the Soviet Union, addressed subjects such as sexual behavior and abortion and faced editorial rejection and censorship. At the same time she engaged in ethical and political reflection, as in The Moral Basis of Politics (1938).

In addition to adult fiction, she wrote notable fantasy and science fiction — including Memoirs of a Spacewoman (1962) — as well as travel books and children’s literature. Her long career and the thematic breadth of her work secured her a prominent place and lasting influence in Scottish literature.
