About

Natalie Dessay (born Nathalie Dessaix) is a French operatic singer known for her light lyric and coloratura soprano repertoire and for a strong stage presence. She became known at a young age for technically demanding, spectacular roles—such as Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann and the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute—that showcased her ease in the high register and her dramatic intensity.

Her international career was established through engagements at houses such as the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, and through praised portrayals of characters including Blondchen, Zerbinetta, Adele and Fiakermilli. Prizes in competitions and training at French conservatories propelled her early operatic and recital opportunities.

She faced vocal problems in the early 2000s, underwent surgery and a period of recovery that temporarily took her off the stage; however, she returned and remained active until concluding her operatic career in 2013 with Manon. Since then she has devoted herself to recitals, theatrical projects and recordings, including collaborations with composers such as Michel Legrand and albums that span classical and popular music (among them recordings of Brazilian music).
