About

Nâzım Hikmet Ran was one of the most influential Turkish poets and playwrights of the twentieth century, also active as a novelist, screenwriter, director and memoirist. Known for the lyrical flow of his verses and for combining lyricism with political commitment, he rose to prominence as a leader of the Turkish literary avant-garde by introducing free verse influenced by Soviet futurism.

His work and his communist activism marked his career: repeated arrests and long sentences made him a central figure in political and cultural controversies in his country. His imprisonment in the 1940s became an international cause, with intellectuals such as Jean‑Paul Sartre and Pablo Picasso calling for his release; in 1951 he left Turkey for the Soviet Union and had his Turkish citizenship revoked.

Translated into more than fifty languages, his literary legacy influenced musicians and poets — several of his poems were set to music and some were translated into Greek by Yiannis Ritsos. He is still remembered both for the aesthetic power of his poetry and for the political commitment that shaped his life and work.
