About

Nellie Melba, born Helen Porter Mitchell, was an Australian coloratura soprano who achieved international fame in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first Australian classical musician to gain worldwide recognition, she was noted for performances in French and Italian works, with a comparatively small repertoire—about 25 roles, roughly ten of which became closely associated with her career.

Trained in Melbourne and refined in Paris, Melba made her operatic debut in Brussels (1887) and established herself on major stages such as Covent Garden, the Paris Opera and, later, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she debuted in 1893. Her technique and stage presence secured successes in roles such as Gilda, Violetta and Lucia, despite occasional criticism of her pronunciation in foreign languages.

Beyond her artistic work, Melba took part in charitable activities during the First World War and maintained enduring ties with Australia, returning frequently for concerts and local initiatives. Her name remained linked to the promotion of Australian classical music and to the international recognition of the country’s artists.
