About

Ninfa Laurenzo was a restaurateur and food entrepreneur who became an emblematic figure in Houston’s culinary scene. Of Mexican-American background, she entered the food industry with the Rio Grande Tortilla Company, founded with her husband, and in 1973 opened a small ten-table restaurant across from the tortilla factory that became the core of the Ninfa’s empire. Lacking formal restaurant-management training, she became known for greeting customers, supervising the kitchen and embodying local hospitality.

Under her leadership, the family-owned RioStar group expanded, creating concepts such as Diego’s, Bambolino’s and other associated establishments, although not all ventures succeeded. The Ninfa’s chain became a symbol of Houston’s diversity and opportunity in the following decades, popularizing Tex-Mex dishes and influencing the region’s culinary scene.

Affectionately known as “Mama” by customers and staff, Laurenzo also served on the boards of foundations and community organizations. Her legacy endures in Houston’s food memory: the warm informality, a menu rooted in Hispanic traditions and the story of a business rising from modest family beginnings.
