About

Norman Beresford Tebbit, Baron Tebbit, was a prominent figure in British Conservative politics in the 1970s and 1980s. A Member of Parliament from 1970 to 1992 for Epping and later Chingford, he was known for firm positions on employment, trade unions, and individual liberty, issues that shaped his ministerial and parliamentary work.

A member of Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet from 1981 to 1987, he held key posts: Secretary of State for Employment, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, and later Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and chairman of the Conservative Party. His tenure coincided with economic reforms and clashes with the trade union movement during a period of transformation in the British economy.

In 1984 he survived the IRA bombing at the Grand Hotel in Brighton, an attack that left his wife severely incapacitated and prompted his resignation from government in 1987 to care for her. After leaving the House of Commons in 1992 he was granted a life peerage as Baron Tebbit and sat in the House of Lords until his retirement in 2022.

Known for forthright speeches and for advocating a reduction in union power, Tebbit left a controversial and lasting imprint on Conservative politics in Britain, remembered both for his ministerial roles and for his influence on the ideological battles of his era.
