About

Nusrat Bhutto (née Ispahani) was an Iranian–Pakistani public figure known for her role in Pakistan’s political life as the wife of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and later as a leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). As first lady from 1971 to 1977, she acted as a political collaborator and headed the party’s women’s wing, accompanying her husband on official visits and mobilizing popular support. After Zulfikar Bhutto’s fall and execution, she became the party’s lifetime president and led the democratic resistance against General Zia ul-Haq’s military regime, enduring imprisonment and campaigning for the restoration of democracy.

In the 1980s she returned to Pakistan and, following the PPP’s 1988 victory, joined her daughter Benazir Bhutto’s cabinet as a minister without portfolio and represented the Larkana district in the National Assembly until 1990. Her public work was marked by advocacy for political rights and the promotion of women’s participation in Pakistani public life. Family disputes with party members and health problems reduced her political involvement in subsequent decades.

She is remembered in Pakistan for her efforts on behalf of democracy and women’s empowerment and was posthumously honored by the parliament with the symbolic title “Mādar-e-Jamhūriyat” (Mother of Democracy).
