About

Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II was an American writer, producer, and (usually uncredited) director of musicals for nearly 40 years. He was twice awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Song. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. He won the Tony Award eight times and was a composing partner on at least 850 songs.

He became famous for a series of musicals and operettas, such as: Sunny (1924), Rose Marie (1924), The Desert Song (1926), Showboat (1927).

From 1943, with Richard Charles Rodgers in adapting comedies and novels, among them: Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), Allegro (1947), South Pacific (1949) (Pulitzer Prize), The King and I (1951) and The Sound of Music (1959).
