About

Oscar Levant was an American pianist, composer, actor and entertainment personality whose career bridged classical music and popular culture. Trained in piano with teachers such as Zygmunt Stojowski and having studied with Arnold Schoenberg, he became known both for performances of the classical repertoire and for compositions and arrangements for film; among his best‑known songs is “Blame It on My Youth” (1934).

From the late 1920s he established himself in Hollywood, collaborating with figures such as George Gershwin and composing for dozens of films between 1929 and 1948. At the same time he became a regular presence on radio and television, noted for his caustic wit and wide musical knowledge, which earned him roles in films such as Rhapsody in Blue (1945) and An American in Paris (1951).

On television he hosted The Oscar Levant Show (1958–1960), where he combined piano performances with monologues and interviews; the program became controversial for some of his outspoken remarks. Levant left a legacy as a versatile performer and cultural commentator, remembered both for his pianistic technique and for the sharp personality that shaped America’s musical and media scene in the twentieth century.
