About

Oskar Schlemmer was a multifaceted German artist—painter, sculptor, set designer, designer, and choreographer—closely associated with the Bauhaus. As a master of form at the school, he worked in the sculpture, mural painting, and theater workshops, shaping the curriculum and coordinating projects that integrated art, industry, and performance, particularly between the Weimar and Dessau campuses. His theoretical and pedagogical writings influenced generations and secured his place among the institution’s most significant faculty.

His best-known work is the Triadisches Ballett (Triadic Ballet), a production in which costumes and movement turned performers into geometric shapes and blocks of color, a performative synthesis of the Bauhaus’s visual concerns. He also distinguished himself with murals, paintings, and sculptures; Bauhaustreppe (1932) ranks among his emblematic works.

Amid Germany’s political radicalization, Schlemmer left the Bauhaus in 1929 and continued to teach in Breslau. In the 1930s he faced restrictions: part of his output was shown in the “Degenerate” Art Exhibition (1937) and he endured a period of creative isolation. He died in 1943 and is remembered for his investigations of body, form, and space and for his interdisciplinary contribution to modern art.
