About

Otto Loewi was a pharmacologist born in Germany, known for demonstrating that nerve transmission can occur via chemical messengers. His decisive experiment, published in 1921, showed that a fluid taken from a frog heart stimulated via the vagus nerve could slow a second heart — direct evidence for the existence of a neurotransmitter, later identified as acetylcholine. This finding changed the understanding of nervous physiology by establishing the role of neurotransmitters in mediating between electrical signals and tissue responses.

Over his career, Loewi worked at major European research centers including Strasbourg, Marburg, and Graz, and later joined New York University after emigrating to the United States in 1940. His work also examined pharmacological effects relevant to therapy, such as interactions among adrenaline, cocaine, digitalis, and calcium.

In 1936 he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, shared with Henry Dale. His scientific and personal life — marked by forced displacement due to the political context in Europe — left a lasting legacy for neuropharmacology and the understanding of cellular communication mechanisms.
