About

Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, born Francesco Forgione, was an Italian Capuchin friar and Catholic priest whose life became a focal point of popular devotion in the 20th century. He was known for his intense prayer life, penitential spirit, and dedication to the sacrament of confession, attracting thousands of faithful seeking spiritual guidance. Beginning in 1918 he bore the stigmata of Christ’s Passion, a phenomenon that inspired both deep veneration and scrutiny and accompanied him for decades.

Beyond the mystical dimension — to him are attributed gifts such as bilocation, reading of consciences, and healings — Padre Pio also committed himself to large-scale social works. He conceived and founded the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (House for the Relief of Suffering), opened in 1956 in San Giovanni Rotondo, which became a noted hospital in Europe and a concrete expression of his care for the sick.

After his death in 1968, his tomb became an important pilgrimage site. Canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II, he remains a central figure of Catholic devotion, remembered both for the mystical phenomena attributed to him and for the institutional and pastoral legacy he left.
